Texas Outstanding Biology Teacher Award
Alton L. Biggs Excellence in Biology Teaching Award
Each year, the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT), through its Outstanding Biology Teacher Award
(OBTA), attempts to identify an excellent biology instructor in each
state. Nominations of candidates by NABT members and friends help us to
recognize those individuals whose outstanding work in the classroom
qualifies them for this award.
The
OBTA program is sponsored by Carolina Biological Supply Company, and
recipients are special guests of at the Honors Luncheon held at the NABT
Professional Development Conference. Recipients also receive gift
certificates from Carolina Biological Supply Company, resources from
other sponsors, award certificates and complimentary one-year membership
from NABT.
Additionally,
TABT offers the Alton L. Biggs Excellence in Biology Teaching Award.
This award uses the same forms as the Texas OBTA and the same Awards
Committee determines the recipient or recipients. This award is
sponsored by the TABT and recipients are special guests of the TABT
Luncheon held at CAST. Recipients also receive a monetary award from
TABT, complimentary one-year membership in TABT and award certificates.
Who is Eligible?
… Current biology and life science instructors (grades 7-12) with at
least three years public, private, or parochial school teaching
experience. A major portion of the nominee’s career must have been
devoted to the teaching of biology or life science. NABT membership is
not a requirement. Unsuccessful candidates may be re-nominated. OBTA
winners are ineligible for 10 years after selection.
What is the Process?
… After nomination forms have been submitted, candidates will complete
an application form summarizing their professional experience, academic
background, education philosophy and provide four recommendations from
colleagues familiar with their teaching effectiveness. Classroom
observations and/or videotapes may be required of finalists in the
evaluation process.
Who Can Make Nominations? … Colleagues, administrators, students, self-nominations, or anyone competent to judge the candidate’s teaching effectiveness.
What Are the Criteria?
… Preparation, teaching ability and experience, cooperativeness in the
school and community, inventiveness, initiative and student-teacher
relationships are all important criteria for selection.
How Do I participate? … Fill the Nomination Form or the Candidate Record Form and send to Robert Dennison, TABT Awards Director, at dennisonrz@gmail.com, 10406 Jockey Club Drive, Houston, Texas. The deadline for nominations is February 1, 2016. Application forms may also be obtained from the same sources. The Application Form and recommendations are due no later than March 1, 2016.
